First to be operated by private company

A new bus terminal for southern routes, located five kilometres from the existing one on Boromratchonnanee Road, will begin service in November, with a capacity to serve over 100,000 passengers a day.

The 2.2-billion-baht terminal will be the most modern of its kind in Southeast Asia, with large plasma screens showing bus schedules and IT services such as broadband Internet, according to Paritat Kiatbampen, general manager of Siri Project Construction Co Ltd, which holds a 20-year concession to operate it.

''The new southern bus terminal will be the first to be operated by a private company. If our project is successful, the Department of Land Transport will use it as a model for the construction of other terminals. Chiang Mai will be next.''

Siri Project, which owns the 37-rai plot, spent 500 million baht on the construction, which began in mid-2005 and was scheduled to be completed in two months.

Mr Paritat said the terminal, which is on Pin Klao-Nakhon Chaisi Road in Taling Chan, would have two buildings _ a bus terminal with parking lots for over 200 buses and a passenger terminal with parking space for more than 500 cars.

The passenger terminal will have retail space of 13,000 square metres for rent, with monthly rates ranging between 360 and 1,900 baht per sq m. Currently, it is 80% booked and monthly rental revenue of five million to eight million baht is projected, said Mr Paritat.

''[There will be] No more thousands of passengers cramming into the bus terminal due to efficient bus-flow management. They can relax in the terminal before their departure,'' he said.

''The current terminal in Pin Klao with 12 rai is very small and too crowded to support passengers during peak periods or long holidays. During the Songkran festival, up to 1.8 million passengers go through the terminal.''

After the new terminal, which can support more than 1,200 bus trips a day, the current terminal will stop its operation.

Besides serving buses in the southern routes, the terminal will also support buses from the northern, northeastern and central routes. Van operators on the southern routes will also be allowed to use the terminal.

The Transport Co Ltd, a state-owned enterprise under the Transport Ministry, will collect a fee equivalent to the fare of one seat on each of the buses using the terminal while Siri Project Construction will live on the rental revenue.

Mr Paritat added that the company had another plot of 33 rai near the new bus terminal. About 10 rai would be co-developed with PTT Plc into an NGV station with the rest to house bus firm Thai Doen Rot's headquarters and bus-maintenance facilities.

Siri Project Construction, established in 2002 with registered capital of 30 million baht, is owned by the Temcharoen family that runs Thai Doen Rot, a major bus transport firm for the southern routes.

The company's managing director is Pol Lt-Gen Piyapattana Temcharoen, the brother of Piyapong, a Thai Rak Thai Party MP for Taling Chan district.
